30 March - Sentimental Pet Cemetery Journey

Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery - Skippy

Back for a visit, after many years, to the beautiful
Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery in Aspen Hill, Maryland. Now in the hands of the Montgomery County Humane Society, the place is looking much nicer than it has in the past. Oh! Here it is back in 1921.

And now, one more snap from my visit:

Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery - Guardian Cats

... Stern guardian cats. Also saw...

Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery Cat

... A live guardian cat rushing about on important business. Also, a herd of deer.

27 March - More Cat Noir

Nutmeg and Maxine in a Cat Noir Still

With the new production of
Mildred Pierce premiering tonight, I thought I'd post a still from a little-known film adaptation of one Jim Cain's lesser-known works, The Tortie Always Rings Twice.

Previous Cat Noir Thrillers:

Cats Behind Bars
Strangers on a Bridge
Dial Meow for Murder
Dial G for Gazebo
The Eternal Triangle

26 March - Blessings of Democracy

Calvert County (Maryland) Democratic Party Oyster Roast, 1982

Driving out to
Calvert Cliffs one Sunday in October, 1982, I saw a roadside sign - Democratic Party Oyster Roast - All are Welcome! - I jammed on the brakes, pulled over, and had a delightful time. Besides the roasted oysters, they had 'em scalded and raw, too. Also fried chicken. And beer - lots of beer. I remember asking what sort of bash the local Republicans threw - crackers and club soda, I was told.

19 March - Retreat Street, 1987

Retreat Street Arabber Stable, Baltimore, 1987

The guys liked to ride the colts from the arabber stable over on Retreat Street off North Avenue, Baltimore - doubt if the colts liked it much, though.

18 March - Recent Acquisistion - Cat of the Regiment

Now on display in and drawing crowds to the Janus Museum's Photography Galleries is this superb anonymous stereoview, c.1900 - Cat of the Regiment. See, he's sitting in a little tent next to a little artillery piece - how martial he looks! Possibly it's an homage to...

... Madame Touzin's immortal
Le Chat du Régiment, circa 1885.

12 March - Imaginary Menace

Cat Menaced by Giant Squid

Cat Menaced by Giant Squid - Leroy gives a restrained performance. The squid is very good, though - quite menacing. May be too intense for certain audiences. Not taken from either
Giant Squid vs. Cat or Giant Squid vs. Cat 2; it's an imaginary film still, just like Cindy Sherman's.

7 March - Rare Cat Combat Stereoviews at Auction

Cat Combat Stereoview

Very pleased to be able to offer a set of three stereoviews documenting Leroy and Natasha's titanic struggle
posted here earlier. Also included - a free bonus "Cats of Washington Grove" stereoview. It's up on eBay right now!

Update - So far, bidding on the stereoview set is not what you might call brisk. Only two days left.

6 March - On Safari with Roosevelt and Llamas

Theodore Roosevelt with Llamas

Last night I dreamed that I was an archivist for Henry Ford, and one of my duties was to take care of his two llamas. One of them was very friendly and affectionate - his name was Bosco. The other one was a bit shy, and I never learned his name.

Then Ford gave his llamas to Teddy Roosevelt, and I conveyed with the llamas. At dream's end, TR was trying to decide whether or not to take the llamas with him on
his African expedition of 1909-'10. I recall that I had my reservations about the advisability of taking llamas to Africa, but (in my dream) I was quite willing to serve as TR's llama wrangler. I woke up before he made his decision, but I'll go to bed early tonight to see the outcome. I hope I've had my shots, in my dream.

However, I notice that there are no llamas in this charming Roosevelt safari set. This figure looks a bit like Gus, though.

Of course, this wasn't the first Teddy Roosevelt dream I've had.

5 March - Spring Wallowing Training in 3D

Leroy in the North Wallow in 3D

Captured in thrilling 3D (red/blue glasses required), Leroy limbers up in the North Wallow and gets a bit of a jump on the official opening of Wallowing Season. This will be the first Wallowing Season opener to be covered in thrilling 3D, by the way.

Meanwhile, over on First Avenue...
